Growing up in small town south we generally always had a garden and my favorite was always the amazing tasting juicy tomatoes. Memories of watching my grandmother make tomato juice and canned tomatoes in her kitchen with the old metal juicer in the sink and huge canning pots on the stove. I can still smell them and feel the heat of the stove. My forever favorite was the iconic "mater" sandwich she would make me. White bread slathered with Miracle Whip, salted sliced tomatoes then cut into 4 small squares just right for little hands. I have made many of these in my lifetime since then but I don't think any ever tasted as good as hers....Grace E. Wright.

Grow your own tomatoes even if it's in a bucket or a pot. Show your kids how to grow a garden. Who knows we all may NEED to know how to do these things again one day. It's an amazing thing to nurture tiny seeds or plants into mature food producing marvels of nature.

Of course homegrown tomatoes also make the best BLT's....Gracie's favorite sandwich on earth.
